Veg Out, St Kilda
Veg Out Community Gardens began in 1998 on the site of the abandoned St Kilda bowling club that was about to be developed into a carpark. It is a non-profit, voluntary group comprised of local residents and community organizations who share the site made up of 150 garden plots. The initiative to create the Veg Out Farmers’ Market has resulted from demand from the local St Kilda community and support from City of Port Phillip.
Nearby Acland Street is a busy inner suburban shopping strip and designated tourist precinct, but no longer has a greengrocer or butcher leaving residents no choice but to rely on the two multi-national supermarkets for their household shopping. The similarities with the needs of other inner urban communities and the success of other farmers’ markets in similar demographics in Melbourne have made VOFM a local identity.
